KUCHING: The Sarawak government places great emphasis on the three pillars outlined in the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, namely economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government needs individuals with high levels of knowledge in the three pillars.

“This is where Yayasan Sarawak comes in to train our children and includes these three pillars in developing them,” Abang Johari said in his speech at the 14th edition of the Malaysian Inter-State Foundation Sports Festival (PESAYA) closing ceremony at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), yesterday (Feb 19).

He explained that Sarawak has also set up universities funded by the Sarawak government and among them were Swinburne University and Curtin University, which are both from Australia.

“We are working with these universities and we have assets that are borne by the Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawak,” he added.

Abang Johari assured that universities in the state are open to all.

“The universities here are not only for Sarawakians but are also meant for those who wish to study in Sarawak,” he said, adding that the state government also fully owns four higher education institutions and one training centre.

The learning institutions are Swinburne University, Curtin University, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) and i-Cats University College, while the training centre is the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS).

Abang Johari added that the courses offered by these institutions include the latest majors relevant to the new market and economy.

Also present were Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, State Secretary Datuk Amar Abu Bakar Marzuki and Yayasan Sarawak director Mersal Rosli.
