KUCHING: Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) Commercial and Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) have entered into a strategic partnership to help entrepreneurs register their intellectual property (IP).

CENTEXS Commercial general manager Shahren Yusri said he welcomed MyIPO’s effort to raise awareness on the importance IP protection.

“This effort is in line with CENTEXS Commercial’s initiative to ensure that every entrepreneur who has his or her own product registers their IP.

“This is important to avoid the individuals’ product or brand from being exposed to the risk of being copied by irresponsible parties,” he told a press conference at the Songket and Keringkam Gallery here yesterday.

He also said CENTEXS Commercial looked forward to working with MyIPO to organise programmes to guide individuals or entrepreneurs to register their IP.

“At the same time, we also want more entrepreneurs from Sarawak to apply for the available funding under the Intellectual Property Filling Fund 2.0,” he said.

Last month, a total of RM4 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan, was allocated for the Intellectual Property Filling Fund 2.0 for a four-year period until 2025.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the fund was expected to benefit 2,000 entrepreneurs, especially the small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The fund covers fee financing for all intellectual property component filings, including cost for work which requires professional and technical services such as patent drafting.

The types of IP include patent, industrial design, copyright, trademark, geographical indication, and IC layout designs.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development and MyIPO member Datuk Dr Rashidah Bolhassan and MyIPO director general Abdul Haris Lakar were also present.
