KUCHING: The Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) subjects need to be exposed to children who are attending preschool.

In stating this, Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications (Utilities) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that early exposure to STEM is believed to be able to further equip them in preparation to study at primary and secondary school levels.

“When this field of study is emphasised from an early stage, we believe it can foster students’ interest in STEM.

“With this, the children will not be afraid to study and undertake the STEM subjects, including biology, physics, chemistry and others that are considered killer subjects,” he said.

He said this during the closing ceremony of the Hari Potensi Kanak-Kanak Tabika Kemas Zon 1 Kuching 2022 at Yayasan Sarawak yesterday.

Emphasising on the matter, he said that the exposure of STEM subjects in preschool education is important with the development of the state.

He explained that this approach is necessary so that children as young as four years old can be prepared to face such courses when they are at the next level.

Meanwhile, touching on the ceremony, the Pantai Damai assemblyman lauded the organising of the Hari Potensi Kanak-Kanak Tabika Kemas as it will bring out the potential within the students.

“It is believed that such programmes will be able to hone their talent and unleash their new talents,” he said.

He added that Kemas does not only focus on the academic development, but also emphasise on the co-curricular aspects in order to nurture successful children in all aspects.

For that, he expressed his hope that cooperation with Kemas will result in success in the planning, implementation of academic programmes and even co-curriculum.

“This is important because these children will be the future leaders who will lead and govern the state,” he said.
