KUCHING: The Malaysian Journalist Code of Ethics is introduced to elevate journalistic integrity and ensure accountability.

Kuching Division Journalists’ Association’s (KDJA) Teo Teck Wei said that this code necessitates journalists to utilise their influential role in shaping public opinion and societal understanding responsibly.

“The profound influence journalists wield comes with the responsibility to adhere to a strong code of ethics,” said Teo in a statement.

Central to the Code of Ethics is the commitment to rigorous fact-checking, source verification, and the avoidance of disseminating misleading or fabricated information.

Teo said that adherence to these ethical guidelines is crucial for building trust and credibility within Sarawak’s community and across the nation, enabling the public to make well-informed decisions.

Moreover, the code takes a stand against sensationalism, personal biases, and skewed reporting. By promoting unbiased and diverse viewpoints, it empowers readers to form their own educated perspectives.

“Ethical standards are key in sustaining public trust, as they hold journalists to account, foster transparency, and ensure professional practices are upheld, particularly in Sarawak,” Teo added.
