KUCHING: The Sarawak Kajang Ethnic Community Association (PKEKS) has expressed concern that school children in Belaga should not be embroiled in international political affairs and conflicts between nations, communities or groups of people.

PKEKS special advisor Jay Jonoi Surai questioned the purpose of ‘Solidarity Week For Palestine’ programme in all schools nationwide, deeming such initiatives unnecessary

“This would have a negative mental and psychological development impact for our young people in school. Children are born ready to learn and have many skills to learn over the years.

“They depend on parents, family members and other caregivers and teachers to develop the right skills,” he said in a statement today (Oct 28).

He said young students are particularly vulnerable at this stage of development, and their experiences can significantly impact their brain development.

“Exposure to stress and trauma can have long-term negative consequences for the child’s brain, whereas talking, reading, and playing can stimulate brain growth.

“Over the period of this week we noticed that there are mixed reactions and the majority in our community are against and opposed to the said programme,” he added.

Surai also suggested that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs address the matter appropriately.
