Dr Yii urges the KWB to provide clear explanation on dirty water experienced by residents in Kuching.

KUCHING: The Kuching Water Board (KWB) has been urged to explain about the persistent ‘dirty water’ experienced in multiple parts of Kuching for the past few months.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen said there have been multiple complaints received from different parts of Kuching where the issue has persisted for weeks with some areas experiencing it for months.

He said some of the complaints came from areas such as Tabuan Jaya, Tabuah Laru, Tabuan Desa Keranji, Star Garden, Muara Tabuan, Batu Kawah, Stapok, Stutong Resettlement Scheme, Jalan Dogan, Jalan Upland, Simpang Tiga, Matang Jaya and Sungai Apong among others.

“While I understand that the KWB conducts yearly water main fushing programme to clean the water mains of any dirt, debris and other materials as well as gate valve repairs which may cause water running from our taps to be dirty, this should only be temporary in nature.

“The public is concerned on the cleanliness and safety of such water,” he said today.

He said the board must also give a clear timeline on when the problem can be resolved adding that it is not only affecting residents, but also businesses in the area.

“The constant water supply disruption problem and dirty water has not only caused adverse impacts on the quality of life of consumers, but they have also subjected each household or business owner the added burden of having to install water tanks or purchase treated water.

“This is a serious issue as water is one of the most basic necessities for everyone. What is worst is that it is persisting even in the urban area of Kuching,” he said.
