Farmer charged with negligently causing death of woman

KUCHING: What was to have been a farmer’s normal hunting trip with two of his women relatives went tragically wrong when one of the women was killed and the other, injured.

In the Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (Jan 18) was Domanic Ridis, 46, who was slapped with two charges.

On the first charge, he was accused of causing the death of Manyot Dunggah, 76, by firing his shotgun negligently, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 304A of the Penal Code.

He allegedly committed the offence on Jan 8 at about 12.45pm at No. 95 Kampung Plaman Dunuk, Jalan Padawan near here.

The accused faces a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both if found guilty.

On the second charge under Section 37 of the Firearms Act 1960, Domanic was accused of injuring Nancy Bungag, 73, on her left leg with the same weapon.

He faces a maximum two years’ imprisonment, or a fine of up to RM5,000, or both upon conviction.

Domanic claimed trial to both charges.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar ordered the accused to appear in court on Feb 21 for pre-trial case management.

Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
