KUCHING: Fifteen victims who were affected by the fire incident at Lorong 16, RPR Batu Kawa last Monday are still struggling to secure a place to relocate.

Following this, special assistant to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman, Michael Kong said he had visited the victims, who are currently placed at Dewan Perpaduan RPR Batu Kawa, to extend his support and solidarity.

“It was heartening to see that some of the fire victims had managed to find temporary accommodations, however, my concern grew when I learned that 15 victims were still struggling to secure a place to relocate.

“As an immediate solution, they have been temporarily housed at Dewan Perpaduan RPR Batu Kawa until suitable arrangements can be made for their shelter,” he said in a posting on his Facebook page following his visit.

He also commended the dedicated efforts of the staff from Civil Defence Force and Welfare Department, who were working diligently to address the immediate needs of the fire victims.

“They are providing essential assistance to these families, ensuring that their basic requirements for food and shelter are met. Additionally, the Welfare Department is conducting counselling sessions to help the victims cope with the trauma and stress caused by the incident,” said Kong.

He added he was informed that the Welfare Department is also assessing the financial impact on these affected families, where financial assistance will be provided to mitigate their losses, and will determine the appropriate amount based on individual circumstances.
