SIBU: All stakeholders are urged to combat forced labour, enhancing Malaysia’s reputation.

Sarawak Labour Department director, Awang Raduan Awang Omar, said the progress had been made at fostering compliance with national labour laws among employers and workers.

“These efforts have led to a workplace that is both more harmonious and conducive,” he said during a ‘Combating Forced Labour’ event held at the Kpg Bahagia Jaya Teku community hall today (Feb 17).

The event, a collaboration between the Sarawak Labour Department and the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) Sibu Branch, represents Malaysia’s commitment as a member of the International Labour Organisation, which has recently ratified Protocol 29 on forced labour.

Awang Raduan also revealed the initiation of an investigation into forced labour incidents reported in Bintulu last year.

“We urge anyone aware of such practices by their employer to report them to our department or the nearest office,” he added.
