Fire engulfs fabric store

Thick smoke can be seen emitting from the shophouse at Mile 17, Jalan Kuching-Serian yesterday.

SIBURAN: A ground floor fabric store was completely engulfed by an afternoon fire at Mile 17, Jalan Kuching-Serian yesterday.

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said that firefighters from Siburan and Serian stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 3.25pm.

Fortunately, the fire blazed one shophouse unit only which was located at a three-storey building block. The other four shophouses next to it were unscathed.

The fire destroyed the store and the fabrics stored in it at the ground floor. Due to the fiery flames, the shophouse’s second floor was also slightly damaged.

The firemen got into action promptly, dousing off the flames to contain the fire from spreading. The fire was restrained at 4.45pm.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

The firemen ended the operation at 5.30 pm after the situation was deemed safe with no risk of fire reignition.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred is still under investigation.
