KUCHING: For many Sarawakians, Christmas is a time for family gatherings, laughter and celebration; however a couple was devastated by a tragic fire that occurred just before Christmas last weekend.

Moggie Ibrahim and his wife were only left with their clothes on their back when their wooden house was totally burnt down last Friday at Kg. Bajong Hilir, Sebuyau.

Their tragic plight was referred to Hope Place on Tuesday by a concerned public and this morning the non-governmental organisation (NGO) visited the couple, bringing some temporary aid.

Among the contributions were food items, mattresses, blankets, drinking water, rice cooker and clothes.

“The fire started due to electrical faulty. The whole house was 100 per cent burnt down, as it was made of wood,” said Moggie.

The couple was grateful and thankful however, as many of the villagers came to help them.  Their assistance was even more meaningful as villagers showed their Christmas spirit during this time of year. Now the couple is staying at a small store room behind their house. The store was the only building that was made of cement.
