KUCHING: A fire safety module chiefly for children will be implemented in stages at 31 Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) stations in the state.

JBPM Sarawak director Khirudin Drahman said the module is aimed at helping to raise awareness on the roles and responsibilities of the department in the target group.

Khiruddin said children must be taught to be heedful of the safety of their surroundings from an early age, and this is where the module is useful.

“Towards this end, we at JBPM are giving some space for members of the public to approach us through community programmes like birthday celebrations at their nearest fire and rescue stations on weekends from this month onwards.

“We will insert a 30-minute presentation on fire safety so that parents can also benefit from the programme,” he said in a press conference after the Annual Fire and Rescue Parade 2019 here yesterday.

Khirudin said the linkage between the department and members of the public should be increased as it can be beneficial during fires and emergencies.

“JBPM is planning a safety module that can be used by students, especially those in primary schools, during calamities. It is important that they know what must be done in such situations to minimise injuries and loss of lives,” he said.

The event saw 22 media practitioners from  Utusan Borneo, Radio Televisyen Malaysia, Dayak Daily, Borneo Post, Sin Chiew Daily, See Hua Daily, Astro Awani, Bernama, The Star, Harian Metro, Berita Harian and TV3 receiving a certificate of appreciation each from JBPM for their contribution and cooperation in disseminating important information to the public. – Bernama
