KUCHING: A Class A fishing boat was detained for using a trawl in Zone A around the coast of Kampung Alit, Kabong at 12.56pm on Wednesday.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Tanjung Manis Zone director Commander Mohd Ariz Md Kassim said the fishing activities were detected around 12.30pm by MMEA while patrolling Kabong waters in an Ops Permai operation.

He said two locals, aged 25 and 52, were detained along with their boat and catch, and were then escorted to the Tanjung Manis jetty for further investigation.

“The case will be investigated under Section 8 (b) of the Fisheries Act 1985 for violating the legal conditions of the licence by fishing using a trawl,” Mohd Ariz said in a statement yesterday.

He urged the maritime community and fishermen to comply with the legal conditions of their boat licences and prioritise their safety when conducting activities at sea by wearing safety jackets.

“Previously, MMEA Tanjung Manis Zone had reminded the fishing community not to violate the legal conditions of the license for Class A boats by conducting fishing activities using trawls in unauthorised zones,” he said.
