KUCHING: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan recently disclosed the essential details of the revitalised National Service Training Programme (NS) in Kuala Lumpur.

The programme is primarily aimed at youths aged 16 to 35, with special attention to those who have completed their SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) examinations.

Its objective is to impart basic military training and facilitate character-building activities for young Malaysians.

New Sarawak Tribune conducted interviews with members of the public to get their opinions on the matter.

“I agree with certain aspects. However, from an economic standpoint, I am convinced that individuals aged 20 to 30 would be reluctant to commit to a 90-day training programme due to their personal obligations, despite any offered allowance. Although this programme could be beneficial, as it is in South Korea, immediate mandatory participation may not be the best approach. Starting with voluntary entry might be more effective. I hope the programme will promote national identity and unity, as well as enhance personal development and life skills.”

“I disagree with the proposed changes to the NS. It needs reevaluation, especially for individuals in the 20-35 age bracket who are often married with children. Enlisting them could pose risks. The programme would be more suitable for unmarried individuals, particularly 18-year-olds, and I hope it has a positive impact on our youth.”

“I support the new policy regarding the NS. It should focus on those aged 16 to 25 since individuals between 25 and 35 usually have employment and families. I anticipate that such initiatives will promote self-discipline, national pride, teamwork, self-defence abilities, and discipline.”

“I wish for the programme to be well-organised, offering participants a comprehensive experience that includes physical training, education, and character development. Ideally, it would also provide opportunities to cultivate leadership skills, which are beneficial in many aspects of life.”

“The programme will be inclusive and accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status, fostering equality and diversity. It’s imperative that it operates within a safe and secure environment, prioritising the well-being and safety of all involved. Regular evaluations of the programme are essential to integrate feedback from participants and stakeholders for continuous improvement. I am optimistic about the NS’s potential to positively influence our youth, steering them towards becoming exemplary citizens and contributing to the nation’s progress.”
