KUCHING: Residents of several housing estates here have been clamouring for help to address the perennial issue of flooding which has been plaguing their neighbourhoods.

In making this statement Saturday (March 11), Michael Kong, the Special Assistant to State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, said despite numerous letters and requests for dialogue with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), no concrete action has been taken to resolve the issue.

Kong has been advocating for a bipartisan approach to resolving the flooding issuesand has called on the authorities to provide technical information and master plans to equip his team with the necessary information to push for government funding in the legislative assembly.

“The affected areas include Jalan Luis, Jalan Durian Burung, Stampin Resettlement Scheme, Borneo Garden, Iris Garden and Jalan Burung Lilin.

“Residents have reported water levels rising to three feet above the road level, causing stress and anxiety to those affected.

“Despite claims of insufficient funds, the residents have urged the local councils, MBKS or MPP, to prioritise the drainage issues in the affected areas.”

The lack of action, he said, has left residents frustrated and concerned about their safety.

“Late last night, I personally went down to Iris Garden to witness the extent of the flooding there.

“Because the water had risen above road level, I had to park my car at the shoplots at the 3rd Mile traffic lights before walking to the neighbourhood.”

He said residents there could not get any rest throughout the entire night as they were up since 11pm to move belongings and monitor the downpour and water level till early morning.
