SIBU: Deputy Minister for Housing, Public Health and Local Government, Michael Tiang Ming Tee will propose the construction of a flyover here to be included in the 13th Malaysian Plan.

Stating this, he said he has asked the relevant authorities to start doing surveying and planning works to find the right location and its feasibility to resolve Sibu’s increasing traffic loads.

“I have talked particularly to the Public Works Department (PWD) officers to start their study and survey, and we will work on the right location for this first flyover in Sibu town.

“Sibu has been waiting for this for so many years and everyone think that we need it. We need it to ease our traffic flow because Sibu is getting more and more developed over time. So I think a flyover is justified,” he said at the ninth anniversary celebration dinner of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP)’s Nangka Branch here on Thursday.

The Pelawan assemblyman said SUPP Nangka Branch was formed in 2014, which was nine years ago during the party’s infighting and its weakest moments as the party has lost a lot of political positions, and there was serious split within the party.

“Yet our comrades present tonight chose to stay with us. When Nangka branch was firstly formed, it has over 500 members and has doubled to over 1,000 members now.

“It just shows that how much our comrades believed in us and choose to be loyal and committed to SUPP. At the same time, I also want to thank Sibu public for giving us another chance to start a new chapter.

“We formed all the local five branches to give us the chance to restart humbly, serve the public with humble heart and with full commitment.

“And that’s why Sibu gave us two seats in the last state election, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek and I for the respective Bukit Assek and Pelawan constituencies.  We have pledged to work hard and serve the people for the five-year term and to help Sibu to upgrade the infrastructure, etc,” he said.

On Democratic Action Party (DAP)’s attack on SUPP for being too regionalist and always talking about Sarawak’s autonomy instead of overall Malaysia, Tiang found it to be very ridiculous for DAP to insult SUPP for that because SUPP was formed for people of Sarawak in 1959.

Thus, he stressed it is the party’s main objective and it would continue to safeguard what Sarawak is entitled to under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and Federal Constitution.

A singing duet between father Jimmy Lau and his daughter Jacquelyn was the highlight of the entertainment programme which captivated the audience with their vocal feat.

Meradong assemblyman Ding Kuong Hiing, chairman of SUPP Nangka Benson Chua, chairman of SUPP Bukit Assek Datuk Chieng Buong Toon and organising chairman Penghulu Lau Hieng Wuong were among those present.
