Flyovers: Why the prolonged delay

KUCHING: DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen’s special assistant Michael Kong has questioned the delay behind the construction of the flyovers at Mile 6 and 7 here.

He said both the flyovers are supposed to be completed in June as announced earlier.

“After months of uncertainty and many hours lost due to traffic jams, it has since been confirmed that the flyovers will not be completed in June. Instead, their completion is once again pushed back to July 2022.

“The question in the minds of many members of the public is, ‘Why the consistent delay?’ This is a project that was supposed to be completed in October 2020, then June 2021, then April 2022, June 2022 and now July 2022.

“We are not taking away the fact that there were delays due to the termination of the project delivery partner (PDP) or movement control order (MCO), but all these have been factored in for the first revised completion date of October 2020. So why is there a consistent delay over the past one year and eight months?” he asked.

He said if the late Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing could construct the more complex BDC-Jalan Airport flyover within one year, then the big question is why are the flyovers at Mile 6 and 7 taking more than five years to complete?

“Thus, it is time for the contractors to buck up and work round the clock if needed to.

“The same goes for the Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak, which is in charge of the project,” he said.

He added that Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap must also bring up this issue with the authorities.

“As the elected representative for Kota Sentosa, Yap is accountable to the people here and must provide answers to whatever concerns they have, which in this case is the prompt completion of these two flyovers,” said Kong.
