Food rations for flood victims ready to be distributed.

MIRI: This Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) today (May 22), began sending food rations to flood victims in Mulu.

According to the minister in charge of the committee, Datuk Lee Kim Shin, for the first stage, 1.2 metric tonnes of food rations from the Welfare Department Miri will be delivered by a MasWings (MH3630) aircraft to the flood victims in the vicinity of Mulu.

He disclosed this after witnessing the preparation to deliver the food rations at Miri Airport today.

Lee added the food rations would be delivered to the flood-hit areas in stages.

The first destination for the delivery of the 1.2 metric tonnes of food rations is Kampung Long Iman.

Also present were Mulu assemblyman and deputy speaker of the State Legislative Assembly Datuk Gerawat Gala and Acting Miri Resident Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf.

A number of villagers near Mulu were reported flooded two days ago. However, water has started to subside in certain areas.

Gerawat has expressed his gratitude to the MasWing chief operating officer (COO) Captain Nasaruddin A Bakar for helping to deliver the food rations to the flood victims in Mulu including Kampung Long Iman, Kampung Batu Bungan, Kampung Melinau and Kampung Long Terawan.

“The delivery of the first batch today involved about 1,200 kg of food rations. 100 packs of food will be sent to the residents in Long Iman while the remaining food rations will be sent on the next flight,” he said.

A total of 544 packs of food rations will be channelled to these four areas, he added.

“We hope that by Monday if the weather condition is good, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) will also help us deliver the food rations via its helicopters to the flood-affected areas,” said Gerawat.
