KUCHING: Political leaders should steer clear of sensitive issues and avoid making controversial speeches that may affect the people’s sentiments.

The reminder came from SUPP Youth Central chief Liew Leong Yee who was reacting to a recent statement from UMNO leaders of the MA63 issue.

“It is an inexplicable and absurd idea to ask for a new Malaysia agreement,” he said.

He felt that rather than suggesting that the MA63 contract be reviewed at this time, UMNO leaders should focus their time and efforts on reviving the country’s economy.

“The people are now living in dire straits. Ringgit is weak and the currency is rising.

“Priority should go towards addressing these problems. The MA63 contract was drawn up when Malaysia was formed. How can we simply have a new agreement?”

He said Sarawak is actively safeguarding the people of Sarawak’s rights and interest, adding that the government is actively evaluating the terms of the contract to retain the existing rights and regain the lost rights.

Liew implored Sarawakians to back Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in the upcoming 15th general election so that the state ruling coalition will have strong negotiation power at the federal level.

“No matter who forms the Malaysian government, Sarawak must remain strong to have bargaining power,” he said.
