KUCHING: Celebrations such as theMid-Autumn festival will greatly foster unity among the various races in Sarawak.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said, it is not only celebrated by the Chinese community but by other races as well.

“This is an interesting thing we can see in Sarawak. I know because every year I am invited to this festival whether in Kuching, Sibu or elsewhere.

“So, this is something that reflects the mutual understanding and tolerance in our community and it is a very unique thing.

“Things like this need to be preserved by the people of Sarawak to ensure unity and understanding among the various communities gets better,” he said when officiating at the Mid-Autumn Festival 2020 here on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Division president Datuk Richard Wee said the Mid-Autumn Festival is the second largest festival for the Chinese community after Chinese New Year.

“This celebration also symbolises the harvest season for the agriculture-based community.

“Besides defending the uniqueness of the culture, it is also our duty to preserve it,” he explained.

At the event, Abdul Karim who is Minister of Youth and Sports announced an allocation of RM20,000 to the Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions.

Also present was Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng, and permanent secretary of the ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Hii Chang Kee.

The Mid-Autumn Festival 2020 was organised by MBKS and the Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions.
