GE15: 11 women candidates to contest for various seats in Sarawak

KUCHING: The 15th General Election (GE15) will witness eleven women candidates contesting for parliamentary seats in Sarawak.

Out of ten parties that will contest here, five of them fielded women candidates to contest in their seats of choice.

The women candidates that were fielded under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) ticket are Datuk Nancy Shukri at Santubong; Datuk Rubiah Wang at Samarahan; Rodiyah Sapiee at Batang Sadong; Datuk Hanifah Taib at Mukah; and Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie at Sri Aman.

From Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), there are two women candidates namely Iana Akam at Puncak Borneo and Elsiy Tingang at Serian while Parti Bangsa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS) Susan George is contesting in Julau.

Ustazah Zainab and Zulhaidah Suboh are contesting under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) ticket at Tanjong Manis and Sibuti respectively.

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) only fielded one woman candidate, Alice Lau Kiong Yieng, who will be contesting at Lanang.

Meanwhile, there are eleven independent candidates contesting in GE15 Sarawak.

They are Affendi Jeman who will be contesting at Santubong; Dr Alim Impira at Serian; Masir Kujat at Sri Aman; Hasbie Satar at Betong; Elly Lawai Ngalai at Julau; Dr Elli Luhat, George Chen, and Michael Lias at Kanowit; Datuk Wong Tiing Kiong at Lanang; Henry Joseph Usau at Selangau; and Wilfred Entika at Baram.

Following the nominations, the campaign period will begin until 11.59pm on Nov 18 while polling day has been fixed on Nov 19.
