GE15: Police open 18 investigation papers

KUCHING: Sarawak police have opened a total of 18 investigation papers about election offences throughout the 15th general election (GE15).

Of the figure, 10 cases are being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and causing loss or damage to another individual’s property.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri when met by reporters yesterday said they had received a total of 48 police reports from Nov 5 to date, including eight reports received on Monday (Nov 14).

As for investigation papers, they have opened 18 (papers) in the same period, two of them were opened on Monday.

“Among the papers being investigated are for criminal trespass and acts of mischief such as uprooting, stealing and burning of flags.

“They are still under investigation and did not pose any obvious threat to public safety.

“The most recorded offence is an act of mischief under Section 427 of the Penal Code and it happens a lot in the Kuching area here,” he said.

Azman added that a total of 2,053 permits to hold campaigns and political talks have been approved from Nov 5 to 14.

With polling set for this Saturday (Nov 19), he advised the public to come out en masse to fulfil their responsibility as voters.

“The police have made thorough preparations to face GE15 in ensuring public safety and order is maintained and we assure you that the election process this time, will run smoothly and safely.

“They should also obey the laws and rules set by the EC to ensure that the process runs smoothly,” he pointed out.
