BINTULU: The communities here need to prepare themselves for rapid development in future, said Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

He said that during his recent visit to Bintulu, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had mentioned that more large scale investment projects by foreign investors would be developed here in stages.

“Thus, every citizen needs to adapt to this situation. It is not impossible. We will no longer lag behind and no longer continue to expect resources imported from foreign countries in the future.

“We must grab the economic and trade opportunities brought by international companies and, at the same time,  learn the latest technologies and management methods that have been used in other countries,” he said in his Facebook post yesterday.

Tiong added  it was also time to  nurture and produce local talents in this district as well as reduce dependence on foreign labour.

“We will not forever depend on foreign countries. We need to be independent and try to improve ourselves.

“Just like renovating and improving longhouses, we need to work together to do it, not just wait for other parties to do it.

“The spirit of unity that we celebrate today is a priceless achievement. So is the improvement of the living standards of longhouse residents,” he said.

Tiong went on to say that the country would be more peaceful and prosperous if all ethnic groups were united and cooperated with each other.

“It is the same with Bintulu. With this spirit, the trend of modernisation will be continued, improvements can be made and the quality of life of the residents will be improved.

Tiong also revealed that since  August 19, he had started visiting about 60 longhouses around Ulu Sebauh.

“Besides reaching out to the residents of the longhouses, I am also aware of the problems they face and promised to solve them as soon as possible,” he added.
