KUCHING: The Public Works Department (PWD) have been urged to notify the public of road closures a day earlier instead of the current practice of “last minute announcements”.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen said prior announcements would prompt road users to make the necessary travel arrangements, especially in areas where traffic is heavy.

He was referring to the road advisory issued by PWD Sarawak Samarahan Division on Thursday (March 9) notifying the public on the temporary road closure or diversions at the Setia Raja roundabout that started on that day and is expected to last until March 18 to facilitate construction works as part of the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway upgrading project.

“I have received complaints from the public, especially road users in the area, that such last minute announcements have caused all kinds of inconvenience and will cause greater traffic congestion in an area that is already very congested,” he said.

He suggested that PWD communicate early with the contractors to have a clear timeline for each segment of the construction and make earlier announcements for the benefit of road users.

“This of course includes temporary road traffic management to cater for the closures of the affected roads and ensure traffic flow,” he added.
