KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) plans to set up its own television channel. Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who was responding to a question raised by a GPS member during the “GPS Town Hall Session with the Chief Minister”, said GPS hit upon the idea because Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) is now under (PH) government.

The questioned raised was: Will GPS follow the same tactic by Pakatan Harapan (PH) who used social media as a platform to promote their propaganda, or have their own cybertroopers to counter attack PH government.

In his reply, Johari said: “In terms of television, it is just a suggestion at the moment because the problem is the channel now, and we GPS must have our own television channels.”

Johari who is also GPS president said GPS-owned television channel would be used to deliver information and news to the public in the state besides channelling various local related programmes.

“Maybe we’ll have news broadcasts for 15 minutes at 7am and 10pm and then broadcast television programmes such as art, our interesting places, culture and cuisine,” he said.

On GPS having its own cybertroopers, Johari said, “To say we have our own cybertroopers or not, that will depend on the party members on how they want to promote GPS and its objectives.”

He said Facebook which was created with the purpose to exchange study notes by the founder Mark Zuckerberg, today has been used for the wrong purpose of defaming opponents and rivals.

“Facebook has become like a knife, it could ‘kill’ peoples’ reputation or break a husband and wife’s relationship apart.

“The era has really changed. Last time when someone was not satisfied with another, they would write a letter, but today everything is being posted on social media,” he said.

He said GPS will ensure the young generation of Sarawakians will be taught how to use technology for their wellbeing.
