SERIAN: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) secretary-general Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi has hinted that the state polls could be held within a year’s time.

Although he was unsure, he suspected that the state election was going to be held soon as the Sarawak State Assembly’s current term was expiring less than a year from now.

“I won’t say that it is very soon. For that you would have to ask the Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg).

“However, we all know that by the rule of law, the state election must be carried out within this coming one year that we have remaining of this term,” he told the press after visiting the wet market here today.

Asked on the preparations of GPS’ election machinery, Nanta assured that the ruling coalition had begun preparing as soon as it was registered.

He added that all components of GPS namely Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak, Progressive Democratic Party and Sarawak United People’s Party had been preparing in their respective ways and as a coalition as their leaders had always been hard at work strategising.

“We, member parties of GPS as well as party members of the parties within GPS, are on our toes, especially when we know that we will have to have an election soon,” he said.

As for the finalisation of the candidates, Nanta, who is also PBB secretary-general, said that the presidents of the member parties of GPS and Abang Johari would have to discuss and put in further considerations.

“The Chief Minister and other senior leaders will lead the finalisations.”
