KUCHING: The implementation of the undersea cable project to export electricity from Sarawak to Singapore is progressing well, said Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Julaihi Narawi.

He said the Sarawak government, through Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), had agreed to provide power supply to Singapore with a capping of 1,000 megawatt (MW).

“The power supply will be from Tondong via the undersea cable and direct to Singapore.

“It is progressing well and hopefully we will be able to get it materialise soon,” he told a press conference when asked on the current progress of the collaboration on the supply of electricity between Sarawak and Singapore, at the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF 3.0) held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, yesterday.

In August, Julaihi had led a delegation to Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) to discuss on the steps to supply or export electricity from the state to Singapore.

The power will be transmitted via an undersea cable spanning approximately 720 kilometres from Tondong, Sarawak through the waters of the Muri-Midai corridor, and ultimately reaching Singapore.

He added that a similar export of power supply is also being implemented to Kalimantan, Indonesia.

“Besides Singapore, we are also having a power exchange programme with our sister state, Sabah and neighbouring country, Brunei Darussalam,” said Julaihi.
