High Court awaits forensic report on murder case of boy

KUCHING: The High Court set the date for the re-mention of the murder case of the four-year-old boy Eric Chang Wei Jie on April 6 pending the results of a forensic report.

Wendy Chai Xue Zhen, 36, and Ling Kok Liang, 51, the couple who took care of the boy should be charged in the High Court today (March 3) under Section 302 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same Code.

Judge Azhahari Kamal Ramli has set a new date for the case after hearing the request of deputy public prosecutor Kong Siew Chuo because the forensic report was not yet available even though the case was transferred to the High Court.

Azhahari ordered that the two accused be remanded in Puncak Borneo Prison while awaiting the re-mention of the case.

In the meantime, Azhahari also urged the prosecution to speed up the process of submitting the forensic report considering that the two accused have been remanded for a long time since March 16 last year.

In addition, the court also assigned an appointed lawyer to defend them in the trial later.

Earlier, the media reported that the couple was charged in the Magistrate’s Court for committing the murder between March 4 and March 7 last year, at around 5 pm, in Lorong 2, Taman Riverview, Jalan Bintawa here.

The child involved was reported missing on March 7 while being cared for by his nanny in a residential area in Bintawa.

The search for Eric started on March 13, 2022 around the waters of Sungai Muara Tebas and the operations were stopped on March 19 after search came up empty.

So far there has been no discovery of Eric’s remains after he was reported missing almost a year ago.
