KUCHING: As another year ends, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the city of Kuching must both look back and then look forward.

Its mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said that there is much to look forward to as a renewed period of growth and development for the city look certain and the city council has been preparing the groundwork for expansion.

“We continue our efforts to help realise the vision of the Sarawak government of a thriving society and we thank them for their support.

“In the last year, many restrictions have been lifted to allow more movement of people to revive the economy of Malaysia, stalled because of the pandemic.

“The economy is starting to pick up again and events and activities are returning to our city.

“Nevertheless, we must spare a thought for those who are still struggling and I hope all these struggles will be over soon as MBKS will do everything in its power to support them.

“The council will continue to provide the infrastructure and the environment for them to flourish – clean, safe, beautiful, sustainable,” he noted.

He added that MBKS is also launching The Mayor’s Awards for next year to recognise all those unsung community heroes who are giving up their time and energies to help those less fortunate than themselves.

Meanwhile, Wee also called on Sarawakians not to slack off even though they had learnt well to live with the virus and how to constantly protect themselves.

“Health and hygiene remain a key concern and we must retain our standards and in fact, the pandemic has allowed us to take a quantum leap forward as the whole community combined in its efforts.

“It has shown us exactly what can happen when we act as one and this is a lesson as we move forward into the future,” he stated.

Additionally, he revealed that MBKS is embarking on its first major public infrastructure project in several decades as the city council look forward to growth.

“Our new UNESCO gastronomy centre and family fun water park promise to be a community hub for all the city’s residents.

“It will rejuvenate our traditional city centre, already a beloved attraction for locals and visitors alike.

“It will provide an impetus for appreciation of our traditions, already underway in our series of murals to adorn Padungan in its 100th anniversary.

“It will also provide a basis for creative expansion for our youth and our communities. We hope all our city residents will get behind it as we proceed with the planning,” he added.

In conclusion, he said that city folks will soon welcome the new year of 2023, the Year of Water Rabbit.

“I am uncertain if the new year will be tougher than the last but I have high hopes that we will have a more positive, colourful and brighter prospect throughout the new year.

“Let’s not lose hope for a better life and better self. I wish you all Happy New Year 2023 and may this new year be the beginning of something great.
