SIBU: The memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked between University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) and Hock Peng is a long overdue collaboration, says Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid.

The UTS vice-chancellor said the Hong Peng Group had contributed immensely to the university’s growth since its inception.

“Hock Peng Group has always been supportive of UTS since April 1, 2013. They have completed one of the most beautiful campuses in Malaysia located in Sibu.

“UTS has a Platinum Green Index Building rating among all the green buildings,” he said during the MoU ceremony here on Thursday (Aug 4).

He added that Hock Peng also established the Toh Li Hua Foundation to support less fortunate students to further their studies at UTS.

“Hock Peng Group is not only helping the students in their studies but also accepting them into their companies for internships since 2013.

“The companies under the group also offer UTS graduates employment opportunities and the group is very supportive of the activities organised by UTS students and staff,” said Prof Khairuddin.

He also pointed out that the Unicity Hostel, built by Hock Peng for UTS students from outside Sibu, was well equipped and affordable.

Meanwhile, Hock Peng deputy managing director Pemanca Datuk Dr Francis Toh Chiew Peng said the main focuses of the MoU were on technical collaboration, research and training.

“We sincerely hope that through the joint efforts of UTS and Hock Peng, we will be able to contribute towards enhancing the competitiveness of our economy, especially in the property development and construction industries.”

“Indeed, Hock Peng has over the years provided training for many senior year students in our offices and project sites.

“We always believe education and training are part and parcel of our life,” added Toh.
