KUCHING: Hope Place Kuching has extended assistance to Nur Shanika Mell Muhammad Sharil Lizam, a one-year-old baby girl who recently celebrated her first birthday while bravely battling a series of life-threatening illnesses.

According to the non-governmental organisation, Shanika was diagnosed with an enlarged heart when she was just one month old.

In July, she contracted a severe lung infection, which necessitated her urgent hospitalisation at Sarawak General Hospital.

Her condition required a two-week stay in the intensive care unit, followed by an additional two weeks of close monitoring in the children’s ward. Throughout her hospitalisation, she depended on tube feeding and grappled with frequent seizures.

After undergoing heart surgery in July and receiving various treatments, Shanika was finally able to return home at the end of August.

However, the family faced mounting medical expenses and had limited financial resources. Shanika’s mother, Sasha, reached out to Hope Place Kuching for assistance.

Hope Place Kuching is currently providing support to the family by supplying diapers and food aid for the entire family.

Shanika’s father, Muhammad Sharil, earns a daily wage as a labourer, making between RM40 to RM60 per day. With three older children to support and educate, the medical expenses for Shanika’s treatment are overwhelming for the family.
