KUCHING: Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK), also known as Hope Place, has come forward to help a young girl and her mother, both of whom are afflicted by schizophrenia, get by each day.

It was alerted of the situation facing Boon Pui Sze, 20, and her mother by medical social workers at Sentosa Hospital recently.

Hope Place was informed that while Pui Sze’s mental disorder was still in the early stages, her mother’s condition was deteriorating fast, as she was now merely lying on a mattress, not moving and just staring into space.

Both out-patients of the hospital, they presently live with Pui Sze’s grandfather in a small wooden shack at Jalan Moyan which does not even have water supply.

Their predicament gets worse from here.

According to Hope Place the girl’s rubber tapper grandfather, Boon King, 68, is the only breadwinner for the family and earns RM500 per month.

“Boon has other adult children but they are also blue-collar labourers who have to feed their own families.

“We also discovered that the grandfather had suffered a stroke before but due to the family’s dire circumstances, he was forced to work,” it said.

Hope Place was told that although both Pui Sze and her mother have Person with Disability (PWD) cards, they have been unable to apply for financial aid from the government as the disability rendered them unable to open bank accounts.

“We were encouraged by the efforts made by the hospital social workers to help this family, and we will assist them in providing supplies of food every three months,” it said.
