KUCHING: i-CATS University College (i-CATS UC) launched its Multidisciplinary Journal of Sustainability (JoS) earlier this year, said its Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Shahren Ahmad Zaidi Adruce.

He said with that, i-CATS has also transformed its educational system into one that is more sustainable.

“This means, there should be no failure unless the student chooses to fail,” he said.

Furthermore, he said i-CATS has always emphasised the importance of Sustainable Development Goals in all of its faculties.

“In a further attempt to increase sustainability awareness, i-CATS and Pusraka Sarawak are working together to develop a measure called the sustainability awareness index.

“Based on our preliminary findings, not surprisingly the public awareness level on sustainability is very low,” he added.

He said this during a Climate Change Awareness, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Potential of Green Economy in Sarawak Programme here yesterday (April 24).

He said that i-CATS was thrilled to work alongside Regenerative X, a climate change-focused Sarawak group.

On a related note, Shahren said that the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has resolute commitment to spearheading the green economy agenda, as shown in his remarks at the Sarawak region’s 2023 Malaysia Sustainable Development Goal Summit previously.

“In Sarawak, it is heartening to know that our Premier has consistently pledged to take the lead on the green economy agenda.

“The Premier touched on among others a systematic energy transition plan towards clean renewable energy, decarbonising transport system and further transition towards a low carbon economy,” he said.

Sharen added that this plan includes the proposed Autonomous Rapid Transit that would run on hydrogen fuels and there are also plans to cultivate microalgae in Bintulu for the production of crude algae oil, which could serve as an alternative to fossil fuels.

“And so, at i-CATS, we also embrace this green agenda, following the leadership of our Premier and Chancellor,” he said.

He the urged the students to seize the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of climate change.

“Take this chance to learn as much as you can about climate change. You will be that new generation who will lead Sarawak towards a sustainable future,” he said.
