SIBU: The youth’s involvement in various social activities, such as the distribution of bubur lambuk during the month of Ramadan, should be intensified.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek said through their involvement in such activities, they will better understand the culture and practises of other communities.

Chieng said that by understanding the culture and practises of other communities, we can apply the spirit of unity and at the same time make Sarawak a peaceful and harmonious state.

“This is not easy, but we need to try our best to understand each other, especially our religion and our habits. Since we have a different religion, we might be different.

“So, this (understanding between each other) is very important for the success of the harmony of our Sarawak,” he told reporters during the bubur lambuk distribution programme at Kampung Usahajaya Baru, Jalan Salim, here yesterday (April 14).

A total of 300 packages of the porridge were distributed at the programme, which was jointly organised by the Bukit Assek Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (SABERKAS) and the Sibu District Community Welfare Society.

In the meantime, Chieng, who is also the chairman of Bukit Assek SABERKAS, urged the public, especially the young generation, to join the association.

“We would like to welcome all the youth to come together and enjoy our organisation. Through it, our youth can do community work,” he said.

Also present was Sibu District Community Welfare Society chairman Daniel Iing.
