Indon gets a year for escaping from custody

KUCHING: An Indonesian man was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment for escaping from police custody at the Tapah police station on June 12.

Kelvin, 23, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 224 of the Penal Code read before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali here Tuesday.

According to the charge, he escaped from police custody at the station at about 12.40pm  that day.

A police officer was about to provide lunch to detainees when he was suddenly attacked by two of them named Kelvin and Bony, causing him to fall.

Both immediately rushed towards the closed main door of the police station. The officer managed to strike one of them from behind but they succeeded in opening the door and escaping.

He and another police officer pursued the fleeing detainees who however managed to escape into the forest area behind the police station.

On June 15,at around 9.02am, police received information that an unknown man, later identified as Kelvin, was asking for food at a fishing pond in Batu 22, Tapah.

Police went to the location and found him was sitting and eating at the back of the premises.

It is understood that police are working on locating Bony who is still at large.

The prosecution was handled by Insp Mohd Adzmei Ahmad, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
