KUCHING: The state government showed its continuing support for the Inter-State Junior Golf Championship with an allocation of RM150,000 to the Sarawak Bumiputera Amateur Golf Association (PGABS).
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurial Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, said this funding aims to enhance youth interest in golf and improve the quality of competition ahead of the upcoming Malaysia Games or Sukma 2024.
“With the participation of teams from other states, it will undoubtedly boost the tourism industry through sports tourism and contribute to the service sector in the state,” he said.
He made these remarks while delivering the Premier’s speech during the inauguration of the tournament at the Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) on Monday (March4).
“We hope that the players and delegations coming in can get a closer look at the culture and experience the warmth of Sarawakians,” he added.
A total of 82 players will compete at KGS over three days, starting from March 5. Ten teams will participate in the championship, representing the Federal Territories, Perak, Perlis, Kedah, Terengganu, Melaka, Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak, and PGABS.
Also present were the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan and PGABS President Irwan Zulkarnain Muhammad Hasbie.
