KUCHING: Embracing inclusivity in early childhood is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic investment in the long-term success and well-being of a nation, said Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

The Deputy Premier noted that in Sarawak’s journey to reach its goal of a developed state by 2030, it has to address the different needs of every segment of society including the young children.

He added that under the leadership of the Premier, the state has put a great emphasis on early childhood as it is a critical period in human development.

“Investing in inclusive and quality education during this phase can have a profound impact on the formation of a society’s human capital. That is why, Sarawak is committed to provide inclusive and quality early education to our children as stated in Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4).

“Every child should be given the chance to reach their full potential, regardless of their background, circumstances, or disabilities.

“A holistic approach of inclusivity should promote opportunities for positive peer interactions, group activities, and foster a culture of acceptance and understanding to contribute to a supportive social environment for all children,” he said.

He said this when attending the closing ceremony of Sarawak Preschool International Convention 2023 at Riverside Hotel here today.

While pointing out that every child has the right to access education and experience a sense of belonging in society, Awang Tengah said that the foundation of inclusive practices lies in the knowledge, understanding, and skills of early childhood educators and caregivers to understand and address the diverse needs of their children effectively.

“Inclusive education thrives in an environment where collaboration is not just encouraged but embedded in the culture.

“Regular communication and collaboration among teachers, special education professionals, support staff, and parents create a holistic support system that addresses the comprehensive needs of each child.

“Establishing strong partnerships with parents, guardians, and community members creates a strong support network that enhances the overall wellbeing and development of each child,” he said.

Having said that, he pointed out that when all citizens have equal access to education, employment, and economic opportunities, regardless of their disabilities, it will create a diverse and inclusive workforce that fosters creativity and innovation, driving economic growth and competitiveness on the global stage.

“Inclusivity is paramount in shaping the fabric of a nation, fostering unity, resilience, and sustainable development. In Sarawak, inclusivity has been one of the pillars of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, where equal opportunities thrive through all sectors.

“It is indeed vital for each of us to acknowledge our differences and complement each other in creating a more dynamic and adaptable society,” he said.
