SIBU: Kampung Datu here will undergo a significant redevelopment while preserving its cultural characteristic, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Abang Johari stressed the need to modernise the only Malay traditional village remaining in Sibu, whilst retaining its cultural characteristics, which are a testament to the heritage cherished in Kampung Datu and its environs.

“If we are to maintain its current condition, we might encounter a lot of problem. But With the reconstruction (by keeping its old feature), we will have a boulevard commencing from Masjid An Nur, extending to the riverbanks, with modern residences and villages lining its path.

“If Darul Hana could be accomplished, I am confident the same can be realised for Kampung Datu, Sibu,” he said.

He said this in his speech at Majlis Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri Bahagian Sibu which was attended by Head of State (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi at Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor’s Hall, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here last night (Apr 13).

Abang Johari said the state government also aims to beautify the banks of the Igan River by creating riverbanks with attractive features, including a convention centre.

“This convention centre will be similar in size to this hall (Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor’s Hall), equipped with modern facilities, suitable for Sibu, especially since it faces the waterfront,” he added.

He added that another facet involves modernising the existing infrastructure in the original Sibu villages by linking these villages to Kemuyang via a new 15km-long roadway.

“This will establish connectivity from Kemuyang to Teku, onwards to UTS, culminating in Kampung Datu. Essentially, Kampung Datu will be extended to Kemuyang,” he said.

Apart from that, the Premier also noted that he had initiated a housing project in Kemuyang, facilitating mobility connections for the Sibu community, thus integrating mobility and creating a new township for the Nangka area.

“This represents our approved and planned course of action, undoubtedly necessitating substantial funding. However, Insyaallah, we shall allocate the requisite resources and execute our plans accordingly. This is the integrated new Kampung Datu,” he said.
