KUCHING: In a bid to showcase and preserve the rich traditions and cultural heritage of the Bisegu ethnic group, a cultural event called “Brarak & Bipajak Gawai Bisegu 2023” is set to take place at the Kampung Segu Benuk longhouse, Jalan Puncak Borneo on June 3.
Organised by the Persatuan Segu Bunuk Penrissen (PSBP) in collaboration with the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) of Kampung Segu Bunuk, the event aims to promote the unique traditions of the Bisegu community.
“This year marks the first edition of the event, and we hope to establish it as an annual tradition,” said event patron Datuk Willie Mongin.
Translated as “Bisegu Gawai Parade & Get-Together” in the Bidayuh dialect, the event aims to foster strong bonds of kinship among the Bisegu clan, spread across six villages.
“It also seeks to invigorate the spirit of togetherness, unity, and cooperation among all Bisegu, regardless of age, rank, or status, while preserving and upholding the spirit and traditions of Gawai, especially among the younger generation of Bisegu,” Willie added.
The Gawai Festival has traditionally been celebrated after the harvest season as an expression of gratitude for the bountiful blessings received, dating back to ancient times. Additionally, the festival serves as an occasion to seek abundant blessings for the upcoming years.
Kampung Segu Bunuk, being the ancestral village of the Bisegu community, was selected as the ideal host for the event. Other participating Bisegu villages include Kampung Sumur, Kampung Sorot, Kampung Sibatuh, Kampung Punau, and Kampung Bratan.
Each Bisegu village will be represented by a contingent showcasing their traditional performances, joined by contingents from churches, women’s organisations, and youth groups.
Renowned Bidayuh artists, including Rozzie Mila, Dino, Ceasar, and Stephanie, have been invited to perform during the event, adding to the cultural festivities.
Moreover, the event will feature the announcement of winners for the best-dressed male and best-dressed female, along with exciting prizes for lucky draw winners.
Willie will serve as the guest of honour at the event.
