SIMANGGANG: The Community Development Department (KEMAS) has organised the Functional Literacy Education (PLF) Class programme to elevate literacy levels among Sarawak’s rural population.

Deputy Minister for International Trade and Investment, Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh shared that the programme, conducted in Kandis, Lubok Antu, has effectively met its objectives.

All PLF participants have mastered the 3M skills of reading, counting and writing.

“I hope that all participants will leverage the knowledge they’ve acquired to seize opportunities and enhance their living standards, especially in the rapidly advancing technological landscape.

“This is crucial in the context of mass media, where internet and telecommunication access makes it imperative for PLF class participants to master applications such as WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.”

He conveyed this in his speech, read by Roseline Neging, a political secretary to the Sarawak Premier, during the closing ceremony of the State Literacy Strengthening Day at Rh Dundang, Kandis, on Sunday (Nov 26).

Mussen also expressed the desire for KEMAS to expand literacy classes in Lubok Antu District, focusing on remote areas lacking proper transportation facilities, such as Ulu Batang Ai, Ulu Engkari and Ulu Lemanak.

During the programme, he allocated his Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant totalling RM10,000 for the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) of Rh Dundang and RM5,000 for Gerempung Indu Rh Dundang (Rh Dundang Women’s wing).
