SIBU: The redevelopment of Kampung Datu aims not only to preserve its heritage but also to raise its dignity, according to Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

“In our quest to uphold the heritage of Kampung Datu, we must ensure its ‘dignity’. Living in cramped and disorderly conditions does not reflect the dignity we aspire to,” he said at the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Holding Sdn Bhd’s heavy machinery presentation to its Sibu branch at the Sibu Islamic Complex today (Mar 2).

He addressed concerns regarding the potential disappearance of Kampung Datu, similar to the fates of Kampung Datu Lama and Kampung Nyabor.

“The transformation I’m overseeing is not about relocation but revitalising 173 houses at the original site. The village’s essence will be preserved,” he assured.

Dr. Annuar outlined a comprehensive plan for the village’s redevelopment, focusing on maintaining the traditional Malay architectural style. He called for cooperation between the residents and the state government for the seamless execution of redevelopment plans.

He also disclosed the establishment of a Foundation, directed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, to manage the development of the village’s 11.11 acres of land collaboratively with developers.

“The plan includes allocating 1 per cent of the benefits to the local council’s governance, 33 per cent to Islamic institutions, and the remaining 66 per cent directly to the villagers,” he added.
