KUCHING: Datuk Snowdan Lawan has expressed his support for Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) in hosting its own version of the Kuching Food Festival.

The Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said, “The Kuching Food Festival organised by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) earlier on was visited by over one million attendees, which was a good number.

“Given this, I’m sure DBKU could organise a similar event, providing traders, especially those from the Bumiputera community, an opportunity to generate profits and simultaneously fostering economic growth within the city.”

Snowdan made these remarks when met by reporters after officiating at the Kenyalang Food Fiesta 2023 at Petra Jaya here on yesterday (August 30).

He commended the event organiser, JAB Events, for spearheading the initiative within DBKU.

“We are open to suggestions for such eventsand I hope DBKU can provide event management teams with the chance to make the event even grander next time, considering there is approximately one kilometre of unutilised space,” he added.

Regarding the expected number of visitors, Snowdan estimated that the fiesta aimed to attract more than 20,000 visitors over the course of its five-day duration.

He expressed optimism that with each successive event, attendance would increase, drawing more people to experience the festivities.

The Kenyalang Food Fiesta, now in its second iteration, kicked off with a vibrant start, featuring 92 stalls offering a diverse array of food, drinks, clothes, and more.

Despite a brief rain shower on the first night, the fiesta attracted a steady stream of visitors, undeterred by the weather.

The event, which coincides with the school holidays, is scheduled to run for five days from Aug 30 to Sept 3, potentially boosting business for participating traders.

Also present was Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak permanent secretary Datuk Sherrina Hussaini.
