KAPIT: The high-speed internet facility in this division will enable residents to enjoy various opportunities to generate wealth, improve digital skills and have access to knowledge.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it would encourage and spur Sarawakians to be a digitally literate community driven by data and innovation.

“With the internet, rural communities in Sarawak will be given a platform to develop socioeconomics and build a strong small and medium enterprise (SME) base by establishing new connections at the local and international levels.

“This will open up a wider scope for rural communities to become successful entrepreneurs and further change the future landscape of Sarawak’s economy,” he said.

His text of speech was delivered by Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Julaihi Narawi in conjunction with the launch of Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunication (SMART) at Rh Empawi, Ng Sekukut, yesterday.

Abang Johari said that by digitally connecting the agricultural community in Sarawak and adapting smart agricultural technology in agricultural activities, Sarawak was on the right track to becoming a net exporter of food by 2030.

“I have stated before that Sarawak cannot be left behind in terms of the use of digital technology and the growth of the digital economy.

“The Sarawak government’s strategy is to build digital infrastructure to expand coverage and

provide broadband networks, especially to rural communities to bridge the digital divide in Sarawak,” he added.

He said SMART was clear proof that rural communities would not be left behind in digital transformation.

“The people of Sarawak need to work together, to achieve the status as the centre of the digital economy to enable us to enjoy growth and prosperity and sustain it for generations to come.

“With the existence of the broadband network in Kapit and other rural areas, Sarawak is able to realise the vision of our state is heading towards a developed state by 2030,” he added.
