KUCHING: The ongoing development projects at Kuching Waterfront are set to enhance tourism activities and provide more recreational and socioeconomic opportunities for both locals and tourists.
Sarawak Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Utility), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said these projects, including the redevelopment of Pangkalan Sapi, construction of the “Ibu Pertiwiku” flagpole, establishment of the English Tea house, and creation of stairways and water cascades, would significantly contribute to the growth of Kuching Waterfront’s potential. The area is interconnected by the iconic Darul Hana bridge.
“The redevelopment of Pangkalan Sapi, which is nearly 97 per cent complete, is expected to wrap up by the end of the month.
“This project entails various amenities such as sidewalks, bus and car parking facilities, public restrooms, public parks, pick-up stations, and five stalls, designed to cater to the public and tourists.”
He said this during a press conference here on Tuesday (Aug 8) following the closing ceremony of the Kuching City Cleanliness Month.
“Another project is the ‘Ibu Pertiwiku’ flagpole construction, which is set to become the tallest flagpole in Southeast Asia. With its completion status at 80 per cent, it is expected to be finished by November this year.
“The strategic placement of this flagpole positions it as the latest landmark in Kuching, adding to its allure among locals and tourists alike.”
The English Tea house has already been completed; however, its entrance has temporarily been closed to facilitate the construction of the flagpole.
“Operations will commence once the flagpole is finalised, projected for November 2023.
“The stairways and water cascades adjacent to the flagpole have also been finished, but their accessibility is temporarily restricted due to their proximity to the flagpole’s structure,” Dr Abdul Rahman noted.
