KUCHING: KupiKupi FM Sarawak can be the catalyst to ignite the flame of Borneo identity.

In stating this, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan said that KupiKupi FM’s presence will not only be a unifying force but also an essential broadcast channel that portrays the society and the livelihood of Sarawakians.

He added that the station’s goal is to be the radio for the people as well as a platform that highlights community stories and entertainment.

“While we are heading into Sarawak’s 60th year of Independence this year, our aspiration is to continue to preserve our Sarawakian identity, our culture and belief into a better Sarawak for our next generation.

“I am proud to note that KupiKupiFM highlights our local talents especially in music where the station has been featuring local music that Sarawakians can be proud of including songs in indigenous languages.

“With this, the station provides a platform for Sarawakian artistes to promote the rich cultural heritage of Sarawak through their music,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the launching of KupiKupi FM Sarawak at iCom Square here today.

In line with this, Snowdan pointed out that as Sarawak has 31 ethnicities, the station has the opportunity to feature these ethnicities to be on air with them.

“We have a lot of ethnicities and we want to tell people about these groups. I am sure that there are many youths who do not have knowledge about these other ethnicities and their languages,” he said.

As such, he suggested that the station hold a segment to highlight ethnicities that are rarely known in Sarawak.

He said it is for the young people to know more about some of the unknown ethnicities that exist in Sarawak.

“Perhaps they have seen some of these ethnicities in books, Google and so on but of course they have never heard how the ethnic groups communicate.

“Therefore the radio station KupiKupiFM can take this opportunity to educate young people so that they know that there are many more ethnicities in Sarawak,” he said.
