SIBU: Rumah Panjang Brawang residents in Nanga Tada Resettlement Scheme have been ordered to move following the landslide that affected the longhouse on Feb 4 this year.

Ngemah Assemblyman Anyi Jana said the State Divisional Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) Sibu had conducted a survey of the location of the longhouse last Feb 7.

“As a result of the survey, the residents of Rh Berawang have been ordered to move. This is because the site of the longhouse is not safe to live in. After all, there is a spring,” he said when attending a briefing on the landslide by the Public Works Department (PWD) here on Wednesday (Feb 15).

The meeting was held to find out the latest status of the 20-door longhouse and its residents and look for an immediate solution to the incident.

To solve the issue or ease the burden of the residents, Anyi pledged to channel some allocation from Ngemah Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) grant to flatten the site of Rh Berawang’s new longhouse.

Two other longhouses in the same area affected by the landslide incident are Rh Jelai (21 doors) where Anyi understood that the PWD Sibu will seek advice from experts from the PWD Headquarters, Kuching to determine the safety level of the longhouse site.

“Whether residents are ordered to move or otherwise depends on the expert report from the PWD headquarters later,” he said.

While for Rh Engkamat (only four doors were involved) Anyi said that the landslide incident involved the ditch in front of the longhouse hence the issue will be referred to the Kanowit District Council (MDK) for further action.

Also present were Sibu PWD engineer Chieng Siong Ming, Sibu PWD deputy engineer Leong King Yap, and Sibu Resident Office representative Diana Toh Kah Yien.
