LAWAS: Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong has stressed the need for massive efforts to prevent future haze incidents in the region.

He said proper cooperation from all parties, including government agencies and the public, was crucial in tackling the issue.

“Incidents such as open fire burning, especially during hot and dry weather conditions, should not be happening.

“The uncontrollable fires will cause more haze incidents, and wind movement patterns can also contribute to the spread.”

He highlighted the importance of constructing peat infrastructure, such as tube wells and check dams, to support the efforts of the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in extinguishing fires by providing sufficient water resources.

“Currently, Lawas has two tube wells and three check dams in place,” Henry said during the launch of the trial and practice of the standard operating procedures (SOP) of the Peat Fire Prevention Programme here yesterday (July 27).

The Peat Fire Prevention Programme aims to enhance preparedness among related agencies and ensure the functionality of peat infrastructure to prevent and control fires effectively.

“I hope that the programme will continue in the future to mitigate the occurrence of haze, especially when caused by open fire burning activities in peaty areas,” he added.
