MIRI: A local suspect is in custody after being arrested for having 876.27 grams of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of RM28,859.
The arrest, made in the Tudan Road area here, is believed to be linked to drug distribution activities.
Miri district police chief Assistant Commissioner Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the successful operation conducted by officers and personnel from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) at the Sarawak State Police Contingent headquarters (IPK) during a raid on Jan 9.
The ongoing investigation is being carried out under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties, including the possibility of the death penalty, life imprisonment, and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
In addition to the substantial drug seizure, law enforcement authorities also confiscated a significant amount of cash and a gold chain valued at RM14,261.40.
The suspect was presented before the Miri Court for a remand application to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile in Matu Daro district, the NCID picked up two men, aged 34 and 35, suspected of possessing 31.40 grams of methamphetamine and 5.40 grams of marijuana, respectively.
Acting on intelligence, both individuals were detained at the intersection of Felcra Igan on Jan 11.
Preliminary urine screening tests on both men turned out positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. The case is now under investigation under various sections of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Simultaneously, law enforcement authorities are urging the public to report any information related to drug abuse activities promptly. The collective effort of the community is important in combating and curtailing illegal activities.
