Local man fined RM2k, jailed for stealing helmet

KUCHING: A 27-year old local man was fined RM2,000 and given three days’ jail by the Magistrate Court here today for stealing a helmet.

The accused, Nazruddin pleaded guilty to a charge read before Magistrate Zaiton Anuar.

Upon conviction the accused is liable to be sentenced to serve a prison term of up to seven years and a fine when charged under Section 381 of the Penal Code.

Zaiton sentenced the accused to five months in jail for failure to pay his fine.

Based on the facts of the case, the accused allegedly committed the offence at a courier premises in Jalan Swasta at around 5 pm on Jan 28, 2023.

At the incident, the accused’s colleague was instructed by their department’s head to check the closed-circuit television (CCTV) because a work member allegedly committed the offence.

CCTV revealed that the accused was carrying an item out from the courier premises and placed it into his car.

Further investigations revealed the accused had stolen the customer’s helmet.

Therefore a police report was lodged and accused was arrested on Feb 7.

Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case, while the accused was not represented by a counsel.
