SEMATAN: Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan welcomes a pilot project on carbon storage in his constituency.

“There are many forest areas including mangrove forests in my constituency.

“If the state government wants to do a pilot project on carbon storage here, it is very much welcomed,” he said.

He said this in his speech during a function to launch the pontoon at Sematan Waterfront today (June 11).

For the record, studies show that mangroves can store about five times more carbon compared to tropical land forests.

Previously, in his maiden speech during the recent State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, Azizul shared that an area of 3,100 hectares along the coastline in the Lundu District from Rambungan to Sematan was a mangrove forest.

He suggested that the gazetted Mangrove Forest Conversation Areas in Sarawak be increased to 30 percent or over 930 hectares of the Total Protected Area (TPA) which within the next two years.

“The mangrove plants could be a source of carbon stocks for the state, thus the TPA can be further increased in the years to come and as the needs arise,” he said.

“It is my vision that the Mangrove Forest Conservation Areas in my constituency can be designated as a Ramsar site (a wetland designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention or The Convention on Wetlands) in the future.

“I will endeavour to offer my fullest cooperation in the pursuit,” he said.
